Bayern Munich continued their good run of form in the Bundesliga with a convincing 3-0 win against Mainz at Allianz Arena on Saturday. With the win on matchday 31, Bayern need just one more win to seal the league title.
Vincent Kompany went with the strongest possible starting lineup for the game. Serge Gnabry got the nod over Thomas Muller for the number ten role due to his recent good run of form. Meanwhile, Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic were deployed in the full-back positions.
Mainz had the opportunity to stun the home crowd in the early exchanges. Jonathan Burkadt managed to beat Kim Min-jae in an aerial duel. The German forward couldn’t keep the shot on target and scuppered a big opportunity.
After the early jolt from Mainz, Bayern woke up and took firm control of the game. The first big chance fell at the feet of Josip Stanisic. The Croatian defender was set up brilliantly by Harry Kane, but he couldn’t keep the shot on target from a favourable position.
Die Roten’s perseverance paid off in the 25th minute. After a neat bit of link-up play between Konrad Laimer and Serge Gnabry, the Austrian found Leroy Sane in front of the goal. The German winger showed great composure to drill the ball past the goalkeeper.
Barring the big chance in the sixth minute, Mainz hardly troubled Bayern in the first half. However, the home side also didn’t create much after scoring in the first half. Michael Olise took matters into his own hands. Laimer found Olise on the right flank in the 40th minute. The French winger hammered the ball past the goalkeeper to double Bayern’s lead going into halftime.
The second half also saw Bayern dominate the proceedings. Mainz hardly got a sniff in the game, but the scoreline didn’t reflect it, as the home side was not efficient with their finishing.
Sane hit the woodwork twice in the second half. The German winger was in brilliant form throughout the afternoon, creating problems for Mainz’s defense. On another day, Sane would have scored a hattrick and taken the match ball home after the game.
The three points were eventually sealed through a towering header from Eric Dier in the 83rd minute. The Englishman was unmarked at the near post. Michael Olise delivered a pin-point cross to find Dier.
The game against Mainz encapsulated Bayern’s season. They dominated the opposition for the entire game like they have done against most Bundesliga teams this season. A win next weekend at RB Leipzig will deservedly crown them the league winners.
