As reported by Sky Germany, Bayern Munich have identified French talent Guillaume Restes as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer.
After suffering a double leg break shortly after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, there were fears that Neuer may be forced into an early retirement. Nevertheless, the 37-year-old returned to the Bayern starting XI when Darmstadt visited the Allianz Arena on matchday nine.
Since then, Neuer has resumed his normal duties as club captain and as Thomas Tuchel’s number one. However, after signing a new deal until the summer of 2025, there is a belief that Der Rekordmeister’s shot-stopper may hang up his boots in two years time.
Therefore, Bayern are starting to prepare for his eventual retirement, and Toulouse’s 18-year-old goalkeeper, Guillaume Restes, has been identified as the heir to Neuer’s throne. Despite his tender age, Restes has started all 15 games in Ligue so far this season, as well as all five of Toulouse’s Europa League matches.
Nonetheless, while Bayern are certainly monitoring the young Frenchman, they have not ruled out other candidates. Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan are potential successors for Neuer, as well as Alexander Nübel, who is on loan at Stuttgart from the Rekordmeister.
