Portuguese defender Nuno Mendes has decided to continue with Paris Saint-Germain amid interest from Manchester United, according to L’Equipe.
The left-back has entered the final 18 months of his contract with the French champions. This has spread speculation that he could head for the exit door.
It was recently reported that the defender is ‘very interested‘ in reuniting with manager Ruben Amorim after their time together at Sporting CP.
However, he has now changed his stance. L’Equipe claim that the defender was willing to consider a potential move to Old Trafford this winter.
His plans have been altered after a conversation with manager Luis Enrique. The Spanish tactician has persuaded him to continue at Parc des Princes.
The defender is prepared to prolong his stay with the Ligue 1 giants and could soon commit his future to the club with a new long-term contract.
United have had troubles in the left-back and left wing-back positions this term. Diogo Dalot has played in both roles, but has been unconvincing.
Tyrell Malacia has provided cover for the Portuguese on occasions, but the Netherlands international has similarly struggled with his defensive work.
Malacia is set to leave on loan in the coming days. United could swoop for another left-back to operate in the wing-back system as Luke Shaw is also unreliable with his injury record.
Mendes would be an ideal signing with his strong defensive positioning and ability to make overlapping runs. However, a deal now appears unlikely.
The £47 million-rated star has snubbed a reunion with Amorim after talks with Enrique. United will need to explore an alternative in the transfer market.
