The plethora of Bundesliga sides interested in VfL Bochum defender Bernardo will apparently have free rein after the season is over. Eintracht Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg, Union Berlin, and Borussia Mönchengladbach shall all have a chance to sign the 29-year-old. This was confirmed by newly-appointed Bochum personnel boss Dirk Dufner at a press conference on Friday.
Whether or not Bochum shall earn a transfer fee for their player remains to be seen. The versatile centre-back/left-back’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but does contain provisions for an automatic extension. Bernardo must log a minimum of two more shifts of 45 minutes or more. The Revierklub must also avoid relegation.
In any event, Bochum’s new managing director confirmed that the player himself had little interest in remaining with the club even in the top flight. A move abroad isn’t out of the cards, but the sheer number of Bundesliga sides interested render a stay in Germany likely.
“He will most likely leave us, even if we stay up,” Dufner said yesterday, “He wants to take the next step in his career and we have to respect that.“
