With the future of Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl in doubt, Bild reports that die Fohlen are looking to Switzerland for his replacement.

Basel midfielder Leon Avdullahu is said to be on Gladbach’s radar. The midfielder is said to be the ‘new Granit Xhaka’ due to his style of play and Balkan roots, similar to the former Gladbach midfielder.

However, Gladbach are not the only team interested in the Swiss under-21 captain. Borussia Dortmund and Fiorentina have both been linked to the midfielder, while Wolfsburg even tried to sign Avdullahu in the winter. The 21-year-old’s contract is valid at Basel until 2028, and he is valued at €7.5m by transfermarkt.

The positive for die Fohlen is that if they are to qualify for Europe this season, they would likely be able to compete financially for the signing of Avdullahu, something that would likely be very difficult if they fail to qualify.

Gladbach have had success buying from the Swiss league in recent years with Yann Sommer, Nico Elvedi, Denis Zakaria, and Xhaka all moving north to the Rheinland.
