An early headed goal gave bottom of the league St Johnstone a win over a lethargic-looking Celtic.

The only goal of the game came in the fourth minute when a whipped free-kick delivery from Graham Carey found the head of defender Daniels Balodis to give the hosts a surprise lead.

It looked like that lead would be cut short in the 13th minute when Stephen Duke-McKenna managed to prevent Nicolas Kühn from tapping in on the goal line with a crucial intervention.

The home fans wanted a penalty for an apparent handball by Reo Hatate as the first half went on but it would have been a very harsh decision.

St Johnstone's plan for the second period was to defend their lead, helped by the ball boys who were clearly told to slow down when retrieving any loose balls.

Goalkeeper Andy Fisher was needed to make a crucial save late on when Adam Idah sent in a low ball for James Forrest who really had to finish from close range.

The Saints managed to hold on in the end as they continue to fight for survival. Celtic meanwhile can get revenge for this defeat when the two sides face off in the Scottish Cup semi-final in a few weeks time.
