Real Betis defeated Real Madrid 2-1 at the Estadio Benito Villamarin on matchday 26 of La Liga as the Whites dropped three vital points in the title race. In spite of going ahead through Brahim Diaz early in the first half, a terrible hour after the 30-minute mark cost them a result as Johnny Cardoso’s header and Isco’s penalty were enough to turn the match around for the home side.

All in all, it was one of the team’s poorest performances this season barring the opening half hour as once Real Betis took control of proceedings, Real Madrid looked absolutely outplayed and out of ideas. There was little creativity in the final third and without the ball, their midfield was being bypassed nonchalantly by Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Carlo Ancelotti will hope for a radical change in the Champions League clash versus Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Prior to the derby, here is a look at the player ratings from the loss to Betis:

Player Ratings

Thibaut Courtois – 6.5/10

Courtois could have done little about Cardoso’s header and Isco’s penalty in spite of diving the right way for the latter. He made a couple of decent saves, however, including a close-range header from Cardoso.

Lucas Vazquez – 4/10

An extremely poor display by Vazquez saw him struggle to keep up with Isco’s mazy feet and pace. He also made no impact going forward as he was easily thwarted by Ricardo Rodriguez.

Antonio Rudiger – 5/10

Rudiger conceded the penalty which Isco converted to win Betis the game and failed to mark Cardoso for the hosts’ equaliser. He looked extremely tired all game and thus, had no noteworthy impact.

David Alaba – 4.5/10

Alaba was just as bad as the rest of his teammates. He struggled to deal with Cucho Hernandez’s runs in behind and physicality with the Austrian’s selection in the team also questionable owing to Raul Asencio’s form.

Ferland Mendy – 6/10

Arguably the best player in Madrid’s back four, Mendy did not allow Antony, Betis’ in-form man, to enter into the box and was not dribbled past even once in the match. He also assisted the team’s goal.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 6/10

Tchouameni was helpless for much of the game. Though he made good forward passes and won his battles with Jesus Rodriguez, it was not enough to earn anything for the team.

Luka Modric – 7/10

Modric completed 80 passes, 13 of which were in the final third. He was perhaps the team’s best player on the pitch but looking at his heat map, it was clear that the 39-year-old had to defend more, especially on the right to help Vazquez.

Brahim Diaz – 6.5/10

Brahim scored the team’s only goal with a tap-in. He looked decent in the match and did his job to link the wingers and Kylian Mbappe effectively as Madrid’s number 10.

Rodrygo Goes – 6/10

Rodrygo’s role was largely limited to the flank and he was forced into defending more often than not with Isco and Rodriguez raiding down the Real Madrid right. He supported Vazquez at the back but as a result, had to compromise on his offensive game.

Kylian Mbappe – 5/10

Mbappe created the chance for Brahim’s goal with a fine pass through Betis’ backline. However, the Frenchman looked lost thereafter and had no important actions with the ball at his feet.

Vinicius Junior – 5.5/10

Besides the last 10 or 15 minutes in which he led the team’s search of a route back into the match, Vinicius was also poor. The winger seemed out of touch with the ball, completed just four dribbles and lost 12 duels.

Substitutes

Eduardo Camavinga – 6/10

Camavinga looked busy on the ball after coming on but his energy in going forward was not matched by the rest of his teammates.

Arda Guler – 4.5/10

Guler was practically nowhere to be seen and disappointed for the second game in a row.

Endrick – 5.5/10

Endrick had two shots after coming on after getting into decent positions but like the rest of the attackers, he also was ineffective.

Fran Garcia – N/A

Fran was introduced very late in the game and therefore, there was little time to make a judgement on him.
