April was a solid month for NJ/NY Gotham FC. The team won three of their four games, scoring 11 goals during the stretch. Their best match was probably the road win against Angel City FC, since the ladies outplayed their opponent and won 4-0.
Ideally, Gotham will continue to build and become one of the best NWSL teams. It will not always be easy though, and the Bats also have the CONCACAF W Champions Cup to prepare for. May will have challenging games, and there might be a loss or two because the team is still building to be the best they can be.
With five games ahead of them, here is a look at Gotham FC's schedule for May.
Gotham FC will return home to face Chicago Stars FC. On paper, this should be the easiest game since the Stars are struggling immensely this year. They have won only once and have lost the other five matches. The team is without their star player, Mallory Swanson, but they have other stars like Ludmila and Sam Staab. Still, Gotham might have a confidence boost after beating the Washington Spirit on the road. As such, it would be shocking if they end up losing any points.
After a stop at home, the NJ/NY side will head back out on the road to play against Racing Louisville FC. They are another team with one win and currently have a 1-3-2 record. However, the visitors beat them on the road last season. Nevertheless, this might be a tricky matchup since Racing has so much talent. There is a chance that the home team finds a way to beat the Bats.
The final NWSL game of May will be against San Diego Wave FC. This is an exciting game and will be Gotham FC's Broadway Night to celebrate Broadway and showtunes. In fact, to promote the game, Midge Purce will be doing the opening monologue of Chicago on May 1. Hopefully, this will be a fun night that sees the home team come out victorious. However, Gotham has only beaten San Diego once. That is why they must play their best while rocking to showtunes before and after the game.
The Champions Cup will resume for the final two games on May 21, and Gotham FC will face Club América Femenil in the semifinals. The Mexican side finished in first place in Group B and is one of the top teams in the Liga MX Femenil. They recently won the Clausura of this season and will play in the semifinals of the playoffs. With players like Kiana Palacios and Irene Guerrero leading the charge, this might be the most difficult game the Bats will play in the tournament.
