Jeremie Frimpong Opens Up About Turning Down Liverpool

Liverpool’s track record of nurturing young talent into first-team stars is second to none. From Trent Alexander-Arnold to Curtis Jones, the Reds have consistently shown a commitment to developing local talent into household names. But as Alexander-Arnold looks set to seek a fresh challenge this summer, attention has turned to potential replacements, and one name that continues to crop up is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

In an intriguing twist, the 24-year-old Netherlands international recently revealed that he had the opportunity to join Liverpool’s academy as a youngster but turned it down for practical reasons. Speaking to Rising Ballers, Frimpong reflected on how a childhood decision shaped his path in football.

Why Frimpong Chose Man City Over Liverpool

Frimpong’s story begins at AFC Clayton, where his standout performance in a tournament final caught the attention of scouts from top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester City.

“My brother was like, ‘there’s going to be scouts here, so you’ve got to show.’ I had that in my head, and I scored a hat-trick in the final and won player of the tournament,” Frimpong recalled.

With offers on the table, Liverpool was initially his preferred choice. However, logistical challenges played a crucial role in his decision.

“I chose Liverpool first and I was going to sign for them but back then driving wasn’t a thing. My family weren’t driving and it was far. Man City were local, so I tried Man City next and it made more sense, it was 15 minutes on the bus,” he explained.

A Career of What Could Have Been

It’s a fascinating ‘what if’ for Liverpool fans. Had Frimpong joined the Reds’ academy in 2010, he could have grown alongside the likes of Jones and Neco Williams. Instead, his career took him to Celtic and eventually Bayer Leverkusen, where he has flourished under Xabi Alonso’s management.

Frimpong’s impressive performances in Germany have reignited links with Liverpool, particularly as Alexander-Arnold edges closer to the exit door. Reports suggest that Frimpong’s agent visited Anfield late last year as the club evaluates their options for the right-back position.

While there’s no certainty that Frimpong would have reached Liverpool’s first team had he joined the academy, his clear quality suggests he would have had every chance. Fifteen years on, the possibility of seeing him in a Liverpool shirt remains tantalising.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

For Liverpool fans, Frimpong’s story stirs a mix of emotions: disappointment over what could have been and hope for what may still be. His talent is undeniable, and his journey from the City academy to Bayer Leverkusen speaks volumes about his determination and ability to thrive under pressure.

However, the idea of losing Alexander-Arnold—a local hero and a generational talent—leaves a bitter taste. No matter how skilled Frimpong is, replacing someone who embodies the club’s ethos will be an uphill task.

There’s also the lingering question of why Liverpool allowed such logistical barriers to prevent Frimpong’s signing. For a club that prides itself on spotting and securing young talent, it feels like a missed opportunity.

That said, if Frimpong does eventually join Liverpool, fans will undoubtedly embrace him. His dynamic style and attacking mindset align well with Liverpool’s philosophy under Arne Slot. The hope is that, if the transfer materialises, he will fulfil the potential he once could have realised at Anfield.
