The 44-year-old’s message went along the lines of “ensuring that boys from our own basic area like U9, U10 and U11, make it to the Champions League,” with homegrown players not intended to be “squad players, but regular players”.

However, the likes of Kjell Watjen, Filippo Mane, Cole Campbell and Almugera Kabar are yet to see regular involvement on this pitch with the senior team thus far.

Both Watjen and Campbell have featured just 2 and 6 times from the bench respectively, while Kabar has made 4 appearances. Italian prospect Mane is yet to grace the pitch at senior level.

Furthermore, the bulk of those appearances for all four players came during a severe injury crisis period between October and November, with over 12 first-team regulars sidelined for different reasons.

Ruhr Nachrichten reports the youngsters have often been let down with original agreements broken, being shuffled back and forth between U23 and professional squads, and playing in the 3.Liga without having trained with those teammates all week.
