Cardiff City striker Callum Robinson is yet to know whether a new contract will be offered amid a mightily-impressive 2024/25 campaign to date

Cardiff City striker Callum Robinson has revealed he does not yet know whether he will be awarded a new contract at the club, with his three-year deal currently poised to run down in the summer.

The Bluebirds have a number of key contractual calls to make in the not-too-distant future, with a potential rebuild very much on the cards following the conclusion of the current campaign.

At the time of writing, up to 12 senior players on Cardiff's books - along with Raheem Conte and Kieron Evans - will be out of contract come the summer, while the club have the option to extend the terms of skipper Joe Ralls for a further season.

While it's somewhat difficult to imagine Cardiff intending on offering fresh terms to the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Yakou Meite and Jamilu Collins, for example, a number of key players are also among those approaching the final months under contract and that represents a significant call of duty for the club to address.

It's notable, mind you, that Robinson is among the glut of senior players soon to be out of contract amid significant supporter demand for his services to be retained following an impressive redemption campaign under Omer Riza this term, and the star striker has addressed his situation after inspiring Cardiff's emphatic 3-0 victory over Swansea City in Saturday's south Wales derby showdown.

Callum Robinson drops Cardiff City contract update

Robinson, who joined Cardiff on summer transfer deadline day in 2022 from Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion in a reported £1.5 million move on a three-year deal, has admitted he's "not sure what's going on behind the scenes" regarding a potential new contract.

The Republic of Ireland international has been a key figure for Cardiff and recorded 13 goal involvements from just 23 matches across all competitions in his debut campaign, although last season was blighted by injury as he struggled to make the grade during Erol Bulut's time in charge.

But under Riza, whom Robinson enjoys a strong relationship with, the frontman has been revitalised and scored his ninth and tenth league goals of the season in the win over Swansea on Saturday.

When quizzed on his contract situation, which is a considerable talking point among supporters at the minute, Robinson told WalesOnline: "I don't like getting involved in that. I've always been like that with my agent. I've been with my agent since I was 15, we've got that relationship, he will call me if something happens.

"We will see what happens, I'm not sure what's going on behind the scenes, I don't like all that. He knows that it affects me, he tried it once before when I was at Preston and I started wobbling!

"You can see with my performances on the pitch, I don't really know what's going on, I just have to keep doing my business and hopefully good things come.

"I've enjoyed my whole time here. Last year people were saying, 'Does he want to be at the club?' I never had an issue with the club or the fans. I scored goals at the start and then had a hamstring injury. Last year, obviously, was not to my standard, but I have loved it here and enjoyed my time here.

"I am enjoying my football at the moment. We are where we are, I'm an experienced player and from the ability we have in the team, we should definitely be higher up in the league.

Cardiff City must offer Callum Robinson a new contract

Cardiff no doubt have some tricky judgment calls to make between now and the summer, but the decision of whether to hand Robinson is a clear no-brainer. The 29-year-old has more goals and assists at Championship level than any of his peers and is the only Cardiff striker to have even found the back of the net this term, underlining his importance.

Although Cardiff are all the way down in 20th position - just one point above Portsmouth and Luton Town in 22nd and 23rd respectively - just two players in Borja Sainz and Josh Maja have recorded more strikes from open play this term than Robinson, who is, for the large part, operating off significantly less service in a struggling side.

Unsurprisingly, Robinson is a real fan favourite in the Welsh capital and his status was only heightened after he etched his name into south Wales derby history this weekend, meaning Cardiff would doubtless face strong - and rightful - backlash if they were to let him go without offering fresh terms.

After a difficult old time of it last time out, Robinson has stepped up to the mantle this time around and, should Cardiff successfully stay in the division, they will have his efforts to thank. There's not much point in letting the situation drag out - he has been a class act this season and deserves clarity with the offer of a new contract sooner rather than later.
