Can Chelsea get back on track?

Chelsea have two games coming up this week against two very different teams. One is against Wolves, the other Manchester City.

No matter which of the top bookmakers ranked by BetZillion you look at, the Blues are favourites against Wolves and outsiders against City – fairly heavy outsiders, in fact. That reflects the up and down nature of Enzo Maresca’s team’s form this season. Nobody – bookies included, would be surprised if we were to lose to Wolves and then beat City.

In case you were wondering what BetZillion is, it’s a site to help people find the best ways to bet using rankings, reviews, news, insights and guides from the people who know best. Sergio Collins is the founder of BetZillion, whose idea was to make sports betting easier, cleaner and clearer for bettors. Sergio’s aim was to empower the wagerers against the bookies by giving them the information they need to make better decisions. As he put it himself: “we aim to help punters worldwide by delivering pitch-perfect analysis of bookmakers and useful guides, ultimately providing all the tools they need to succeed in sports betting.”

For Chelsea fans, that would mean diving a little deeper into the stats than just looking at wins and losses, although they provide a pretty stark picture right now on their own

8 wins in a row in all competition, followed by no wins in 5 – is it just natural statistical variance, or has something fundamental changed? That’s exactly what tools like BetZillion help you explore.

For our part, based on a mixture of the eye test and the numbers, it’s a bit of both (isn’t it always?). Results have fallen off a cliff, but have performances? Not really. We got lucky in a few games in that winning run, and have got unlucky in a few games since then. It happens. A few better decisions in front of goal in those 5 games and we’d be having a very different discussion right now.

Injuries are starting to build up – but players are also returning from injury. Reece James on his own is a match winner, and his ability to start both games this week will be an important factor in. But regardless of the reasons for the crazy swing in results, football is a results game, and no fan is going to accept “statistical variance” as an excuse if Chelsea make it 6 games without a win against Wolves.
