Carlisle United's owners are considering approaching Steven Gerrard over their managerial vacancy.
Carlisle United’s US owners are keen on speaking to Steven Gerrard about replacing Mike Williamson, although the Liverpool legend agreeing to the move is seen as a ‘long shot’.
The Cumbrians are on the lookout for a new boss after Mike Williamson was dismissed today following the 5-1 thrashing at home to Swindon on Saturday which left the side five points from safety at the bottom of League Two with just 18 games to play.
Therefore, Carlisle’s situation is an increasingly desperate one, and the club’s owners are on the lookout for a new manager that can keep them in the EFL.
And, according to the Daily Mail, the hierarchy at Brunton Park are ‘considering making a shock approach’ to Gerrard, who is out of work after he left Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ettifaq last week.
Unsurprisingly, the update does state that this move is seen as a ‘long shot’.
Gerrard has had a mixed managerial career so far, with the ex-England international having experienced success north of the border with Rangers, as they stopped Celtic winning ten league titles in a row.
However, he struggled with Aston Villa after making the switch to the Premier League side, and his time in Saudi Arabia was also unsuccessful.
Gerrard doesn’t have the best reputation as a manager among general football fans, but there’s no denying that he would be a massive coup for Carlisle.
As a player, he won many major trophies and inspired Liverpool to glory domestically and in the Champions League, whilst he did well with Rangers, at times, as a manager.
To get someone of his profile to join a League Two club would be huge, and he is the sort of character that could lift the whole club.
But, it’s obviously unrealistic, and whilst the Carlisle board deserve credit for aiming high, they need to be realistic, as this is an appointment that they simply can’t get run.
A remarkably busy transfer window, with 12 new players through the door, means you can’t fault the board for their ambition, and they’re certainly putting money into the club, but they’ve made some poor decisions.
Now, it’s about getting someone who can get immediate results. That won’t be easy, because, as outlined above, the club has had a huge turnover of players this month, so whoever is in charge will need to quickly identify the best XI.
Carlisle are an attractive option though, as they’re a big club by League Two standards, and they do have some quality in the squad, and financial power.
