The most decorated Italian coach, Carlo Ancelotti, slumped to one of the most embarrassing defeats of his illustrious managerial career last night. Barcelona obliterated his out-of-sorts Real Madrid side in a thrashing 4-0 win at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to open up a six-point cushion at La Liga’s table summit.

Ancelotti headed into proceedings having defeated Los Blaugranas in all three competitive matches last term, seeking several historic feats. Real Madrid pulled off a memorable comeback to beat Barcelona 3-2 in this corresponding fixture in April, making it back-to-back home league wins for only the second time in the last decade.

Had Los Merengues made it three in a row on Saturday night, Ancelotti would’ve become the first Real Madrid boss to win three consecutive El Clasicos since 1991. Instead, Robert Lewandowski’s double, followed up by well-taken goals from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, left the Bernabeu in ruins.

In doing so, Barcelona knocked Real Madrid down from a 42-game unbeaten home run in La Liga. Ancelotti would’ve equaled the division’s longest-ever home streak without losing had his disjointed side avoided defeat last night. But it wasn’t the only busted feat in Kylian Mbappe’s disastrous maiden appearance in El Clasico.

Ancelotti could’ve become only the third manager in this fixture’s storied history to win 5+ successive matches after Miguel Munoz and Pep Guardiola.

One man’s loss is another man’s gain. Indeed, fresh off thrashing his former employers Bayern Munich in midweek UEFA Champions League action, Hansi Flick outclassed Ancelotti to become the first Barcelona manager to win his first El Clasico encounter since Gerardo Martino in 2013.
