Celta Vigo forward Santi Mina has been sentenced to four years in prison for a sexual abuse incident which occurred in Almeria in 2017.
The news was reported by numerous outlets in Spain on Wednesday morning, before Celta confirmed in a statement that the 26-year-old will be “temporarily” removed from training with the club.
Mina has been found guilty of sexual abuse but has been acquitted of sexual assault. He must pay €50,000 in compensation to the victim and has had a restraining order imposed upon him, which states that he must maintain a distance of 500 metres from the victim for the next 12 years.
The player’s defence will be appealing the sentence.
Former Celta player David Goldar, now of UD Ibiza, was also on trial accused of sexual assault, but he has been absolved of criminal liability.
If Mina’s appeal is unsuccessful, he will spend time in prison due to the fact his sentence is longer than 24 months.
