Rangers 1-1 Celtic. This was the fourth meeting of the season between the two clubs, with Celtic winning once, drawing once and losing once. Subsequent of Rangers losing to Hibs the previous weekend it was considered a must win game for the hosts. Indeed, it was the last encounter for both clubs of the decade — but Billy McNeill’s side played cautiously. Both goals came within a minute of each other, Johnstone opened the scoring after Latchford slipped on the icy surface going for the ball, but Bobby Lennox replied instantly by ending the decade how he started it, scoring goals. The attendance at Ibrox had been reduced significantly due to the building of the Broomloan Stand meaning only 34,000 spectators watched the Old Firm Derby. In fairness, Celtic stole a point, but not grabbing all three would be costly given the standings at the end of the season.

Dundee United 0-4 Celtic. Martin O’Neill’s men maintained their considerable 10-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League table with a stylish win at Tannadice. It was now five straight victories in the league following a sticky patch when O’Neill’s men were trounced 5-1 at Ibrox which was followed by a sluggish 0-0 draw at Easter Road. Dominating the 90, Hartson, Petrov, Thompson and Larsson made it a comfortable afternoon in the City of Discovery.

Celtic 1-0 Dunfermline. Martin O’Neill admitted after the game that the winter break could not come soon enough with Celtic toiling to juggle domestic action and the UEFA Cup run they were on. A single strike via Henrik Larsson was enough to seal the points for Celtic, but Dunfermline passed up several chances. The Pars rued the opportunity to defeat Celtic for the first time since 1997. The Hoops would travel to Pittodrie for their first competitive outing of 2003 before a much-needed 23 day break before returning to face St Mirren in the league.

Inverness Caley Thistle 0-1 Celtic. The two-in-a-row Scottish champions ended 2013 top of the league on 48 points, 14 clear of Motherwell in second. It all seemed too easy as Neil Lennon’s side made it six clean sheets in a row, and were now unbeaten in 18 matches. During this period, it was clear Virgil Van Dijk was a level above everybody else in the league, consistently strolling games with a move to the English Premier League inevitable. Kris Commons’ winner was his 15th goal of the season.

Phil O’Donnell sadly passed away. 17 years on, we remember Phil fondly for his six years spent at Celtic between 1994-1999. Tragically dying so young, he may be gone but is certainly not forgotten. YNWA.
