FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the news via a press release from Canada Soccer last night.
The 24-year-old midfielder helped Chelsea to win another Barclays Women’s Super League title in 2022 while The Blues also retained the Vitality Women’s FA Cup. Fleming has had to be patient as she has grown into life at Chelsea but she is becoming a more important player for the South West Londoners with every season that passes. With Chelsea having lost the services of long-serving players like Ji So-yun and Drew Spence in the summer, young players such as Fleming have been expected to step up.
On the international stage, Fleming represented Canada on 17 occasions in 2022, scoring five goals. The player helped Bev Priestman’s side to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 while Fleming won a Silver Medal with Canada at the CONCACAF W Championship.
Fleming’s personal highlights for her country in 2022 include making her 100th senior appearance, starting a match as Canada’s captain for the very first time and being the top appearance-maker for the nation in the calendar year. Fleming was also named in the Best XI all-star at the CONCACAF W Championship.
Fleming has now been named Canada Soccer’s Women’s Player of the Year in consecutive years, the first player to achieve that feat since Christine Sinclair in 2014.
