Ahead of the Saturday kick-offs, it is possible that with a win this weekend, Chelsea fans could see their team in the top four after this round of PL games, if other results also go their way.

However, it shows how tight it is that if Newcastle United win and other results don’t go the way of the home side, then Chelsea fans could see their team in the bottom half of the Premier League, once all this round of games are played out.

So what is the mood like amongst Chelsea fans ahead of Sunday’s match?

Comments from Chelsea fans via their message boards The Shed End and CFC Net:

‘They’re a bunch of cheats so we’ll get a ref that’s finicky stops play every thirty seconds for nothing and plays right into their hands .

I desperately want to prove Howe is a d.ck so nothing short of a heavy victory will sufffice.’

‘This is going to be a tricky match.’

‘Not much confidence then, eh.’

‘I had two pints at lunch.’

‘Newcastle are only 2 points behind us and have beaten Spurs and drew with Man City, so I’m surprised to see some playing them down ahead of this match. I think Newcastle are in the battle for the 4th to 6th places this season, along with ourselves, Spurs and Villa. Also, don’t forget, they don’t have European taking up midweek, they’ll be fresh and raring to go. I think a win would be a good result for us, it’s a ‘6 pointer’ for us this season.’

This will be a very tough game in my opinion , not because they’re better than us , but because they are a bunch of cheats , they spend the entire game , fouling , pretending to be in physical pain when tackled fairly , pressurising the referee that they’re the good guys and the opposition are rough housing , breaking your rhythm up with niggly stops and starts etc etc.

We will need officials who are wise to it and I’m almost 100% certain we won’t get them.’

‘This’ll be the game where we know where we’re at and should be able to nod at top-4 or not. Home game after midweek European travels – if we fluff our lines here, it wouldn’t bode well.

All present and fit, James gets benched and Cucu comes in but other than that we should be unchanged from this weekend gone. The heart says home win, my head is a little more cautious (not pessimistic) but we should win this.’

‘If we play at the level of the Liverpool game with just a touch more focus in front of goal and at the back we win, if not a draw. I would bring fofana in and Cucurella though not adverse to giving Veiga a go he looked good sunday.’

‘Newcastle have stagnated the past two years and I don’t see them as contenders for top four. That’ll be Villa, Spurs, Utd and us.

With just one point from the last four, we really need a win here and I’ll be disappointed and a little concerned if we don’t get that win. Palmer’s had a couple of below par performances, so due a good one and that’s all we’ll need to win this imho. 3-1.’

‘They’ll be able to spend massively now thanks to the City ruling.’

‘After all the initial media circus when Newcastle changed hands I think everyone expected them to emerge like Citeh as a very well funded “new” (sorry!) force in the EPL including appointing the latest young English wunder coach (as per the Media) to take the EPL by storm,,,something of a let down with the club seeming to be another good side but not reaching the heights so far,,bit of a mystery given the alleged financial resources.

Not a side to take for granted but for me a puzzle..anyone?’

‘I think they’ve been hamstrung by all the financial rules in play and so haven’t been able to spend as City did, but with the recent ruling on sponsorship, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that change in the near future.’

‘Must win. Simple as. Need to start winning home matches. 3 points separates us from 3rd and 13th.

No individual errors.

No selfishness.

No wasted chances.

No Sanchez bozo moments.

Get the job done. ‘

‘Would like to see Neto, Felix and Nkunku get their shots from the start.’

‘Home form has been quite frankly terrible this season. Liverpool was not a must win. This game is.’

‘With us playing them again away 3 days later in the League Cup I imagine Maresca has two lineups in mind for the double header.’

‘I’d love to hammer Newcastle with both our A squad and B squad.’

‘Can’t understate how massive it is Cucu is back for this one. I think with how Newcastles full backs will like to get up the pitch playing Neto over Sancho for the pace advantage is a must. Would like to see Palmer out wide instead of Madueke as he’s more damaging there cutting in than he is in the middle.’

‘There’s definitely a case for both Neto and Madueke starting. Livramento and Hall struggled bad against Brighton’s press.

CANNOT afford any passengers here.’

‘Honestly from what I have seen so far Tosin seems like a below average defender that does not do anything particularly well.’

‘Absolutely a must win. Palmer / Sancho / Madueke need to turn up and the defence needs to be solid.

Signing a first team keeper in January is a priority.’

‘In the last ten years in the premier league, this fixture has delivered P9 W8 D1 L0 F20 A6. That should scupper our chances. We might need Trippier.’

‘I think Nkunku is the player you need to get into the team, and Sancho is the most likely player he can replace.

The rest of the team should be the way forward for the next few weeks, with James just making cameos from the bench.

The Jorge Mendes Vanity Project should not be seen in matches of value.’

‘Felix?’

‘Yes, one of the players who is in the squad because of who his agent is and not because of performances or ability.’

‘From Felix’s point of view he can only show what he can do with the minutes on the pitch and the minutes he had on Thursday were very good. To be honest, I think Maresca will stick with Sancho, but I just feel that from a squad management POV, one of the players performing consistently well in the ‘B Team’ needs to get a start in the PL, be that Felix, Nkunku or Mudryk.

The signing of Felix was a strange one as I just don’t think we needed him, I’m not sure it was agent based, I think it was more to do with trying to manage the finances, but who knows. I don’t think we can keep criticising the clubs transfer approach when we’re seeing what we are on the field. Veiga is a great example of the clubs recruitment policy working and Madueke, Lavia, Caicedo, Jackson and Sancho are others who are starting to shine and Palmer is shining brighter than any other.
