Chelsea have joined Manchester City in the race to sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus.

The Premier League sides have made enquiries into Luiz’s availability this month with Juventus open to the midfielder’s exit.

Luiz signed for Juventus from Aston Villa in a £42m deal during the summer but has struggled to establish himself in Turin. The 26-year-old has started just three times in Serie A this season.

Manchester City have made an approach to sign Luiz on loan this month, as Pep Guardiola looks to add to his midfield options. Luiz is a player the Spaniard knows well, having spent two seasons at Manchester City – without making a senior appearance – between 2017 and 2019.

City have lacked energy in midfield this season in the absence of Rodri, who is sidelined for the campaign with an ACL injury. With Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic all in their thirties, Luiz is viewed as a short-term solution to the club’s issues in the engine room.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Chelsea have approached Juventus over a six-month loan deal. However, the Bianconeri are not interested in loan offers at this stage and will consider only permanent proposals. Currently, the talks are ‘not advancing’.

Luiz is understood to be open to a return to the Premier League. The Brazil international excelled during a five-year spell at Aston Villa that saw him make 175 appearances in England’s top flight. He was named Aston Villa’s Player of the Season during the 2022/23 campaign. Last season, he helped Unai Emery’s team to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
