Chelsea failed to bring in a striker in the January transfer window, and that decision could come back to haunt the Blues.

Chelsea striker Marc Guiu picked up an injury in the clash with West Ham United, and according to Enzo Maresca, he will be out for weeks.

“Marc is, unfortunately, a bad injury,” said the Blues head coach (via the club website). “Nico is better, and he could be (fit for the game). But it could also be a risk (to play him), so we will see. But it does not look like a long injury.

“Marc could be (a long injury). We are still waiting to know the extent, but it does not look like a short injury. It looks long. Exactly how long, we don’t know yet. Probably weeks.”

The Spaniard will miss the FA Cup fourth-round match-up with Brighton & Hove Albion and crucial league matches against Aston Villa, Southampton, Leicester City, and Brighton.

To make matters worse, first-choice Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is also likely to miss the Brighton game tomorrow after also sustaining an injury against the Hammers.

The West Londoners might already be reconsidering their inexplicable decision to send Joao Felix on loan to AC Milan. He could have given Chelsea more attacking options for the coming games.

Chelsea need a striker to stretch Brighton’s defence and both Jackson and Guiu could have given their tentative backline a run for their money.

Christopher Nkunku can do a job as a back-up striker but lacks the intensity and centre-forward movement to worry the Seagulls. Maresca may have no choice but to start the Frenchman.
