Chelsea’s £50m target says “the sky’s the limit” for brilliant player already at the club

Marc Guehi continues to be mentioned regularly as a potential Chelsea transfer target for this summer, but the defender may be talking himself out of a move here.
In an interview with Sky Sports this week, Guehi heaped praise upon a player in his position already at Chelsea: his old academy colleague Levi Colwill. As so often happens with young players, the shine comes off them a little when we see them every week – we no longer talk about Colwill’s potential, we talk about the flaws which remain in his game.
That’s because we’re watching him under a microscope every week. Guehi on the other hand knows him incredibly well, and from a long view is raving about his potential.
You can see Guehi’s chat in the clip embedded here:
“I’ve known him and been around him. I know what he’s capable of. Honestly the sky’s the limit for him,” Crystal Palace defender Guehi said.

It’s nice for all of us to be reminded that we’re dealing with a top young player here. It’s far too easy to get distracted from that. Let’s not forget, there were people complaining about Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic back in the day. It’s always hard to take the long view.
The question is if Guehi and Colwill will be lining up for Chelsea one day soon. Guehi has been strongly linked with a summer return, with Ben Jacobs mentioning a price of £50m, and it sounds like he’d be very up for it. However with so many other defenders already on the books and so many potential signings linked, we’re a long way from predicting it just yet.
