Chelsea’s Alex Matos wants to join Lens, despite Strasbourg interest

Given Chelsea’s comprehensive recruitment drive once again this summer, some of the London club’s highly-rated prospects may find game time difficult to come by. Alex Matos (19) certainly falls into that category. According to L’Équipe, the midfielder is attracting interest from two Ligue 1 sides.

Matos, whose contract with Chelsea runs until 2026, may leave the English side this summer. Following a loan spell at Huddersfield Town (19 appearances and one goal in the EFL Championship), he has garnered interest from RC Lens and fellow BlueCo-owned side RC Strasbourg Alsace.

Chelsea – understandably – want to send Matos to the latter club, given the shared ownership. However, Lens have been in talks to sign the England U20 international for several weeks and L’Équipe understands that his preference is currently to join Les Sang et Or, now managed by former Stade de Reims manager Will Still. However, Lens are in a situation where they must sell in order to buy. Stijn Spierings and Salis Abdul Samed have been touted for an exit.
