Chelsea have confirmed the news that Dutch international defender Aniek Nouwen has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Blues announced news of the player’s injury via a post on their official club website late last night.

Nouwen sustained the injury during the latest international window. The player has been away with The Netherlands’ Under-23 side as they have faced Scotland Under-23s and Sweden Under-23s. She has now returned to Chelsea where she will receive the full support of the club’s medical staff throughout her rehabilitation.

It has been a tough season for Nouwen. The player returned to Chelsea in the summer following a loan spell with Italian club AC Milan and she has made just one substitute appearance for The Blues this season which came in their recent 5-2 victory over Leicester City at Kingsmeadow. Nouwen is now likely to be sidelined with her injury until at least the start of next season. She is set to be unavailable for selection to represent The Netherlands at next summer’s Olympic Games should The Orange Lionesses qualify for the tournament.

Chelsea continue their season without Nouwen’s services when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to face London rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
