Raúl Gudiño had admitted that the pressure has increased on Chivas in the wake of the success of neighbours Atlas in the 2021 Apertura.

La Academia lifted their second-ever Liga MX title on Sunday after a dramatic penalty shootout win over León.

And while Chivas have a far more illustrious history than their city rivals, goalkeeper Gudiño yearns for the current Flock to write themselves into the annals.

“Being a young squad, living in the same city … first congratulate. I have friends there. Congratulate my (Mexico) team-mates for the great effort and the great tournament they did,” the 25-year-old told MARCA Claro in response to Atlas’ triumph.

“Now it’s our turn. It was Atlas and it’s Chivas’s turn. Guadalajara has to be painted red and white. It is only up to us. It is up to us to raise the glass,” he added.

It has been a turbulent past couple of years for Los Rojiblancos, with veteran managers Luis Fernando Tena and Víctor Manuel Vucetich unable to revive their fortunes.

But with 34-year-old Marcelo Míchel Leaño about to take charge of his first full campaign, Gudiño is confident they can shoot out of the blocks in the Clausura.

“Past tournaments have been difficult at the beginning. We must work very well in the pre-season to get there at full throttle as the tournament begins,” the El Tri international said.

We shall see if they manage to do so when Chivas open their campaign at home to Mazatlán on 9 January.
