Chris Sutton slams John Barnes for controversial Celtic claim

John Barnes had his time as Celtic manager. He was brought in in the summer of 1999 but would be gone by February of the following year. So, it is safe to say that it was not a successful stint by any stretch of the imagination. And that is what makes some of his recent comments sound incredibly ironic.

Brendan Rodgers enjoyed a ton of success during his first run as Celtic manager. He would anger the fans, though, by leaving in the middle of the 18/19 season to become Leicester City boss.

His time with the Foxes was a success as well, all things considered, as they challenged for Champions League spots on more than one occasion while also winning the FA Cup and Community Shield. Of course, the ending was not great.

Rodgers would surprise a lot of people though by choosing to return as Celtic manager. And he has picked up right where he left off, and is winning trophies on a consistent basis once again. But in the eyes of Barnes, he has a 'very easy life' at Parkhead.

Chris Sutton did not sound very impressed with Barnes' comments regarding Rodgers. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:

"It wasn’t easy for him during his time in charge. It didn’t look easy falling 20-odd points behind Rangers in the title race back then. It wasn’t easy to beat Inverness Caley Thistle in the Scottish Cup.If anything, Barnes made a difficult job harder than it was. I loved Barnes as a player. But to suggest Rodgers has an easy life in Scotland is laughable.Let’s be clear, Rodgers had made it look easy. This is a manager who is on track to win 12 out of 13 competitions he’s entered.I don’t care what state Rangers or whoever else are in, that is a remarkable return. It’s up there among the best any boss has managed at the club or in the country."

That is true. Rodgers probably does not get enough credit for the job that he has done as Celtic manager over the years. He has won, and won, and won, without fail, only failing in one domestic competition so far, which was the League Cup last season.

Many might feel that the Celtic job is an easy one but it is not. How can it be when even one loss feels like the end of the world? Just take the recent Glasgow Derby for example. The Hoops still remain 13 points clear at the top but that has not stopped them from receiving heavy criticism.
