Club América has officially confirmed the departure of Leonardo Cuéllar as manager of their women’s team.
The 67-year-old announced the decision to tender his resignation in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s home Clásico Nacional defeat to Chivas Femenil.
“I want to tell you that I have just submitted my resignation from the club, which has been accepted, we are in common agreement. I wish the best to this institution, it has been an honor to be in this position,” Cuéllar said in his virtual press conference.
It took until Sunday morning for the Azulcrema to confirm that the former Mexico women’s national coach was no longer in charge.
A post on their social media accounts read: “Club América informs that, by mutual agreement, Professor Leonardo Cuéllar ceases to be a coach of the women’s team.
“Club América appreciates your dedication and dedication. During his tenure as technical director in the period 2017-2021, the women’s team was Champion in the 2018 Apertura Tournament, giving the América club its first title in the history of the Liga BBVA MX Femenil.”
Hugo Ruiz Martín del Campo has been named interim manager. The 44-year-old has been Cuéllar’s assistant since 2019.
He has four games remaining to get ninth-placed América into the top-eight play-off positions, starting with a trip to Santos Laguna on Monday week.
