Ben Brereton Diaz's Southampton comeback seems fading away. Strangely, that's also true for Chile and his compatriot journalist has now come to his defence.
In less than a year, Ben Brereton Diaz has cut a disappointing figure at Southampton. Assigned with the task of guiding the new Saints attack, Diaz's poor Premier League form has turned many fans away from him.
Now, international football isn't much alienated from club football and a poor domestic form transcends into a dwindling national team role. Expectedly, a similar misfortune happened with Ben Brereton Diaz who returned to Sheffield United to reignite his international comeback ambitions.
As the 25-year-old centre-forward stepped foot in his familiar surroundings, form also followed him. That being said, it must have been easier for Diaz to make a starting case for him in Chile's attacking pecking order.
Acknowledging the reality, Diaz's national team omission is still going on. Well, it sounds intriguingly confusing and that's why his homeland's journalist Juan Cristobal Guarello has opted to clarify the Southampton loanee's stagnant Chile circumstances.
As quoted by Redgol, Guarello reflected on Chile head coach Ricardo Gareca's stance on Diaz: "He decided to cut him out definitively when he saw him crying on the bench, because he doesn't accept that kind of sensitivity."
In case you missed it, Guarello is pointing to Diaz's prolonged substitute role towards the end of Russell Martin's tenure. Recalling that phase of the season, many Southampton fans also felt that the striker's subpar displays were at fault for his declining playing time.
Still, every player deserves a second chance after working his way out to a successful comeback. The same goes for Diaz who is forced to miss out on Chile's matchday squads despite coming on the back of a string of good performances.
Yet, the hardworking and meritorious are always rewarded accordingly for their efforts. Thus, let's see when Diaz's gloomy national team standoff turns into a favourable situation for him.
