Manchester United are reportedly one of the clubs involved in the race for Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt, but he might not be the best candidate for the role.

The Red Devils are desperate to sign a new bomber who can uplift their attacking stats, as Joshua Zirzkee and Rasmus Hojlund have only managed to score three goals each in the Premier League this term.

Therefore, the Premier League giants have been keeping close tabs on all sorts of profiles. Their shortlist includes some of the most sought-after names on the market, the likes of Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres.

On the other hand, Liam Delap represents a cheaper alternative, as Ipswich’s relegation would reportedly lower the value of his release clause to £30 million.

Moreover, Bundesliga insider Christian Falk reveals that United are amongst several clubs chasing Burkardt who is having a solid campaign at Mainz.

Man Utd warned about Mainz striker Jonathan Burkardt

The 24-year-old has thus far bagged 16 goals and provided three assists in all competitions. His exploits have also earned him an international debut with Germany.

Nevertheless, the journalist warns that the striker has a knack for getting himself injured.

“Frankfurt is currently the favourite for a transfer, while Bayern are still hesitating,” posted Falk in his latest column for The Daily Briefing.

“Burkardt is considered to be very injury-prone, and Mainz are already preparing to lose the defender. Burkardt wants to take the next step in his career, and that could be the Premier League.

“Manchester United are rumoured to be one of the clubs from England interested in him, along with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Brighton – they are all said to have scouted Burkardt.”

Transfermarkt’s stats certainly back Falk’s assessment, revealing that Burkardt suffered 12 injuries in his young career, and has missed more than 600 days of action in total.

Hence, the Germany international would likely struggle to remain fit in England. Between the physical nature of the game and the overpacked schedule, the striker could be in for a nightmarish experience.
