GLENDALE, Ariz. — Costa Rica fell 3-nil to Colombia in Group D of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America on Friday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Haxzel Quiros was active early, interrupting an attempt from Luis Diaz in the 6’ to force a header off target.
Patrick Sequeira denied James Rodriguez in the 20’ by punching out a power strike inside the box.
Ariel Lassiter had Costa Rica’s best chance of the match in the 27’ but could not break the deadlock.
Luis Diaz converted from the penalty spot in the 31’ as Colombia took the lead.
Quiros was a bother for Diaz again in the 52’, forcing the Colombian striker to rethink his shot twice before Orlando Galo blocked the attempt inside the box.
Davinson Sanchez extended the lead for Colombia in the 59' by converting with a header off a corner kick.
Jhon Cordoba added a third for Colombia in the 62' to secure the victory.
Joseph Mora came off the bench and denied Yaser Asprilla in the 76’ after the Costa Rican defender tracked back to force the attempt off target.
Haxzel Quiros made one last attempt for Costa Rica 90'+2, but the Colombian defense held on for the clean sheet.
Costa Rica will face Paraguay next Tuesday in Austin. Brazil and Colombia will also face off simultaneously as the group stage concludes and the final spot in the quarterfinals is decided.
