John Eustace and Blackburn Rovers are eyeing a top six finish in the Championship after a busy January transfer window.

It was a rocky start for the 45-year-old at Ewood Park, as he oversaw their safety from relegation to League One last season.

A 19th place finish ensured their status in the second tier, and the team has kicked on under his tutelage in the weeks and months since.

He has done a stellar job at Ewood Park since his arrival, with his side currently sitting in fifth place in the Championship despite a summer window that saw them lose their most influential player in Sammie Szmodics, and then bring in mostly loan players and free transfers.

It meant Rovers knew they needed additions in the meantime this month, with midfielder Augustus Kargbo and former Nottingham Forest defender Yuri Ribeiro joining from Cesena and Benfica respectively, before deals to sign forwards Cauley Woodrow and Emmanuel Dennis were announced shortly after the winter window had closed.

The Blackburn Rovers verdict on the January transfer window

We asked FLW's Blackburn pundit Simon Middlehurst for his views on whether the Venky's sufficiently backed Eustace in January amid all their court issues in India when it comes to funding the club.

He revealed: "I would like to think that there is a lot of fan pressure now, especially over the last couple of January transfer windows now.

"If you look at what has happened with Blackburn and failed transfers in the last two, with Duncan McGuire from Orlando, and then, obviously, Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest.

"So, I think they needed to get this one right. They had to get this one right for the sake of the fans, really.

"They had to do it and get it done properly. So, I would like to think that, yes, they have backed them. But could they have done more?

"There's always wanting more in football. There is always that chance you need it and that thing of wanting players and wanting clubs to do more.

"I think they've done enough with what they can do, but ideally, you would always like them to do a bit more."

Blackburn Rovers could kick on further with Eustace in charge

Eustace has steadied the ship with Blackburn and now a top six finish in the Championship is a realistic aim for the team, but he must be backed by the board more frequently, as it took far too long to get anything done in January and business was left late.

That said, they look to have resolved a major issue for the team this term. Goals have proven to be a problem for Eustace’s side all season, and their tally of 35 league strikes is the lowest of any side in the Championship’s top half.

Their impressive backline has made up for their struggles in front of goal, but it is not something that can be sustainably relied upon solely for a top six finish, especially with competition as fierce as it is in the race for the play-offs.
