FLW's Coventry City fan pundit has given his verdict on the potential pursuit of Tyrese Asante this summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Coventry City are among the clubs eyeing a move for Tyrese Asante this summer.
According to journalist Anthony Joseph, the Sky Blues are targeting a move for the Dutchman.
The defender also earned reported interest from the likes of Cardiff City, Hull City and Aberdeen in the last window.
Asante is also capable of playing right-back, and could be set to depart Maccabi Tel-Aviv at the end of the campaign, even though his contract runs until 2027. He has made 31 appearances and counting in the current campaign, including eight in the UEFA Europa League - representing impressive pedigree as far as Coventry may be concerned.
When asked about the prospect of signing Asante, FLW’s Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez claimed that he could become a capable replacement for Milan van Ewijk.
He believes the defender wouldn’t be the biggest loss to Frank Lampard’s side, as long as a reasonable fee was received that could be reinvested back into the side.
Van Ewijk shone in his first season at the CBS Arena but has divided opinion this time around, with supporters increasingly receptive to the prospect of cashing in on the full-back this summer amid previous interest from the likes of Fulham and Galatasaray.
“Tyrese Asante is not a player I’m familiar with at all, I’ll be completely honest,” Chris told FLW.
“I’ve looked him up since we’ve been linked with him, seems pretty decent, plays centre-back and right-back, but seems to play at right-back more often.
“So, naturally, you would assume he would be a replacement for Milan van Ewijk, who is more than likely going to be off in the summer, especially if we don’t get promoted.
“I don’t think he’d be a massive loss, van Ewijk.
“He was great last season obviously, seems to have lost a yard or two this season, not consistent nearly enough.
“He’s really only had maybe half a dozen really good standout performances this season.
“But he’s one of those kind of players that are getting harder and harder to find, strong, deadly-fast full-backs, and they’re especially becoming hard to find at a decent price.
“So, if he ends up going into a newly-promoted team or Galatasaray, because they were interested last season, or just wherever he ends up, as long as we get good money for Van Ewijk I don’t think he’ll be that big of a loss.”
Deez has claimed that Asante could be a good fit for Lampard’s side, if he joins, and is looking forward to the potential prospect of him signing in the summer.
“It sounds like this new lad Asante would fit right in, take Van Ewijk’s place immediately,” he continued.
“Fingers crossed he’s already better than the Asante [Brandon Thomas-Asante] we’ve already got, who I would be quite happy to see the back of in the summer as well.
“But yeah, it seems like a good signing on paper.
“Obviously depends on how much he is, if we’re going to have to reinvest the money we get when we inevitably sell Van Ewijk.
“Frank Lampard has obviously got connections because for us to even be linked with a team that have done well, performed well in the Europa League, that’s massive.
“I don’t think we sign a player like that under Mark Robins.
“Trust in the scouting, trust in the process, we’ve brought a lot of very talented in in the last couple of seasons, who we never heard of before, unproven, and they’ve done a great job for us.
“So, I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops.”
Lampard will have his first summer in charge at Coventry this year, and it is likely he’ll want to make changes to the squad to fit his style of play, even with the team’s strong form at the moment.
Losing Van Ewijk would necessitate a replacement, and Asante’s versatility could make him a smart solution at a potentially affordable cost.
Van Ewijk has been a solid signing for Coventry, and the Sky Blues will be looking for a solid fee to agree to his sale.
A sale like that for a fee of around £8 or 10 million could be good business, and allow Lampard to be backed well in the transfer market.
