Cristiano Ronaldo: Greatest Goal Scorer Of All Time

Cristiano is one of the most celebrated and debated figures in football history. As his birthday is today, it’s fitting to write an article befiting a legend with an incredible career. His record breaking achievements, unparalleled mentality, and praise worthy work ethic is an inspiration to new players. However, for me, he is the greatest goal scorer of all time. When it comes to the title of the Greatest of All Time, however, I can’t place him at the very top.

Cristiano’s goal scoring ability is beyond dispute. With over 850 career goals, and still counting, the most goals in Champions League history, and the all-time leading scorer for both Real Madrid and Portugal, his numbers are second to none. He has scored in every possible way. From rocket free-kicks, precise headers, and clinical finishes with both feet. Proving time and again why he is the most prolific scorer in history.

His mentality has been instrumental in his success. Unlike some naturally gifted players, Cristiano forged himself into a juggernaut through sheer determination, tireless training, and an unwavering will to win. His longevity and consistency at the highest level set him apart, allowing him to remain a dominant force in his late 30s.

Showboating and Self-Centeredness

However, Cristiano’s greatness isn’t without its drawbacks. His need for the spotlight and tendency for excessive showboating have always been part of him. From his early days of unnecessary stepovers to his exaggerated celebrations and visible frustration when he isn’t the focal point, Cristiano’s desire to be the center of attention can sometimes overshadow his contributions.

While confidence is essential at the elite level, Cristiano often seems to be on the edge of arrogance. His reactions when teammates don’t pass to him, his on-field tantrums, and his fixation on personal accolades occasionally distance him from his leadership qualities.

Cristiano’s move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia was a financially logical choice. Anyone would’ve taken that deal, maybe. One that secured him an astronomical contract and lucrative commercial opportunities. But in terms of legacy, was it the right call? If his ultimate goal was to cement himself as the GOAT, stepping away from Europe’s top leagues might not have been the best move.

Unlike someone, who sealed his legacy by winning the World Cup, Cristiano has yet to achieve soccer’s ultimate international prize. Euro 2016 was an incredible achievement, don’t get me wrong. But a World Cup win would have silenced the debate for many. By leaving competitive European football, Cristiano significantly reduced his chances of proving himself on the grandest stages once more.

Cristiano’s career has been filled with iconic moments. His unforgettable hat-trick against Spain in the 2018 World Cup, his Champions League heroics, and his breathtaking bicycle kick against Juventus. But it hasn’t been without setbacks. His second stint at Manchester United ended in turmoil, with a dramatic fallout that overshadowed his contributions. Yes, we can argue that this had nothing to do with him personally, but due to Ten Hag. His performances at the 2022 World Cup however, were underwhelming, and being benched in crucial games signaled that his elite-level dominance was fading.

Author’s Final Take

Cristiano will always be remembered as ONE of the greatest players in history. His goal-scoring prowess, relentless drive, and longevity have set an unprecedented standard that not everyone could replicate, or even come close. But when it comes to being the GOAT? For me, he falls short. The move to Al-Nassr, his lack of a World Cup, and his self-centered approach all work against him. He remains a legend, but the GOAT title remains out of reach.
