Manchester City may hold historic transfer interest in one of Liverpool’s leading forward profiles, a new report has indicated.

That concerns the future of Anfield star Luis Diaz, whose future with the club remains in an element of doubt despite the immense success experienced by Arne Slot’s team throughout the course of the ongoing campaign.

Manchester City on the other hand have had a hugely difficult season, largely off the back of restricted investment during the last summer transfer window that left the club short in various positions when hit by a flurry of injuries.

The club reacted during the January transfer market by investing upwards of €200 million on three positions within their playing squad, as Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis came into defence, Nico into midfield, and Omar Marmoush into the forward line.

But the question remains whether Manchester City would have turned to the aforementioned Egypt international had interest in one of their direct Premier League rivals’ forwards developed into anything more concrete last summer.

Responding to one user in the latest edition of The Athletic’s Q&A with their subscriber base, highly-respected and well-informed journalist David Ornstein has hinted at Manchester City transfer interest in Liverpool and Colombia’s Luis Diaz.

“Still no sign of a new contract, which is unusual for such a prominent player who has been at Anfield for as long as (Luis) Diaz. Barcelona have long been linked with him; their admiration is genuine,” Ornstein explained.

He continued, “There was definitely something in the Man City reports last summer, too. If he is available, there will be many suitors! Amid all the focus on MS (Mohamed Salah), VVD (Virgil Van Dijk) and TAA (Trent Alexander-Arnold), this is one of lesser-mentioned unknowns at Anfield but still hugely important.

“As we know, Liverpool looked at Anthony Gordon before the June 30 PSR deadline but I don’t know if that will be revisited. They will naturally have a number of other options, too, if something needs to be activated.”

Despite the uncertainty in Diaz’s future, it is somewhat unlikely that Manchester City would revive any interest in the player this summer, unless a clear market opportunity was to emerge surrounding the versatile forward.

A number of Manchester City players’ futures remain uncertain heading towards the summer market, particularly Jack Grealish in the wide roles, with the England international struggling for opportunities this season as well as overall fitness and form.
