FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit has given his verdict on Simon Jordan's latest comments surrounding Turki Alalshikh's takeover interest.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Simon Jordan has revealed that Turki Alalshikh has no interest in taking over Sheffield Wednesday amid supporter takeover hopes.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Crystal Palace owner claimed that the Saudi billionaire is more interested in taking over a Championship club from the south, citing Southampton and Millwall as potential options.
This comes amid reports of interest in a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday from elsewhere, with supporters putting Dejphon Chansiri under pressure to sell.
It was claimed by The Star on Tuesday that the club’s owner rejected an offer from a consortium based in Florida, leading to a second bid.
When asked if Jordan’s comments about Alalshikh are a setback for the club, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna claimed it wasn’t.
He believes the lack of any interest from the 43-year-old means there’s no point in feeling too bad about it, although he urged Chansiri to sell as soon as possible amid this interest from US-based investors.
“Obviously I am absolutely desperate for Dejphon Chansiri to sell the club, and it’s absolutely imperative that he does it as soon as possible,” McKenna told Football League World.
“In regards to Turki Alalshikh, if he wants to take on a club down south, then I suppose that’s his prerogative.
“If he doesn’t have any interest in taking over Sheffield Wednesday, I don’t really see it is a loss. I do think that yes, he possibly could’ve been a good option.
“When the name was mentioned, you could see potential there. However, there was never an offer made. We never knew what his plans were, so if we never knew any of the details, we don’t know what we possibly could’ve had.
“So, with this one we’ve got to move on and, as I said, he may take on another club and we might see what he does there. Possibly in the future we could look back and think that guy could’ve done a job at Wednesday.
“But hopefully interest with other buyers will continue, and the club will be sold as soon as possible.”
Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season under Danny Rohl, whose future at the club is currently the subject of intense speculation.
If Alalshikh is not interested in buying Sheffield Wednesday, then it’s not an opportunity lost for the club.
The Thai businessman can only sell to someone willing to buy, and there are people out there who fit that criteria, but Alalshikh just isn’t one of them.
Supporters will be hoping a takeover could help keep Rohl at the club, as he has been an excellent appointment as manager since arriving in October 2023.
But the longer Chansiri remains in charge, the more likely it is that he will leave given the public issues in the pair's relationship in recent times, as well as the potential for him to take charge of a big club elsewhere.
