In a controversial edition of the Ballon d’Or ceremony last night in Paris, Real Madrid and Brazil star Vinicius Jr. finished as runner-up despite being heavily rumoured to take the top prize in the weeks leading up to the ceremony.

Now that the dust has settled on the award ceremony, details have begun to emerge on the rumoured ‘Ballon d’Or clause in the 24-year-old’s contract, which would have seen him earn a hefty pay packet should he have won in Paris last night.

As per Cadena SER, Vini would have received a €1 million bonus had he taken the biggest individual prize in world football and become the first Brazilian Ballon d’Or winner since Kaka in 2007.

It will be interesting to see whether this type of bonus will be available to Real Madrid’s stars moving forward, as the club have taken measures to distance themselves from the award following what they perceive to be an injustice as Vinicius finished second.

There is also the question of additional revenue which would have come from sponsorship campaigns and other forms of revenue.

It is fair to say that had Vinicius won last night in Paris, his wallet would have felt a little heavier as a result.
