FLW's Leeds United fan pundit has had his say on links to Dor Turgeman, with experienced cited as a key attribute in January.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Leeds United have reportedly approached Maccabi Tel Aviv over a potential January transfer for centre-forward Dor Turgeman, with Daniel Farke eyeing reinforcements ahead of January.
Farke is expecting a quiet window but he has not ruled out making some additions in the winter window, per Leeds Live's latest report. An extra attacking midfielder appears to be on the agenda but a new striker could also be sought.
The latest links emerged via Israeli news outlet Sport 5, who claim that Leeds have already made contact with the Israeli champions over a possible move in the winter window. Turgeman doesn't have a release clause in his contract, and it's stated that they will likely ask for more than €5 million (approx £4.1 million).
MLS side New England Revolution were understood to be showing an interest in signing the young forward in June, but it was reported that the player preferred a move to Europe instead.
We asked FLW’s Leeds United fan pundit Kris Smith for his thoughts on the latest striker link and whether he is a player Leeds ought to be in the market for.
He said: "I don't think Daniel Farke is going to end up seeing it the same way as me in January, but I do think Leeds could do with a new striker in the New Year.
"We are caught between two polar opposite strikers, at the moment. Joel Piroe can finish really well and his goal record speaks for itself, but in other aspects of being a lone striker in our team, he really struggles.
"Mateo Joseph is basically the reverse of that, with his struggles being finding the net consistently and taking his chances when they come for him regularly enough to justify his starting place. He really does everything else so well.
"We need a sort of marriage of those two, and Dor Turgeman looks like a worthwhile target if that £4.1 million asking price is to be believed.
"Given what sort of striker he is, at least from what we can see anyway, he looks quick and skillful, as well as quite composed in front of goal.
"Beyond what you can research about Turgeman, it is hard to form a full judgment of what he could bring to us. That's given that we have no clue how his performances in Israel would translate to the Championship.
"It's a completely different story in this league. If we have to bring a striker in during January, overall, I want a more experienced head and a player who we know can hit the ground running."
Although Kris' perspective on the strengths and weaknesses of both Piroe and Joseph is on the money, there are more pressing concerns for Farke's side in January, given that they currently have three players for one position up front.
Unless Patrick Bamford leaves, there is little chance of any centre-forward joining the club. What Leeds require is more depth in the line of three behind the striker. The supply line has been effective this season but could be made even better with a line-breaking passer in behind Piroe or Joseph.
A high-calibre playmaker would make more of an impact to the current side, with sturdy mid-blocks, compact low-blocks, and defensively resolute teams protecting a lead often Farke's undoing. Many players are dribblers rather than passers, which highlights the need for a difference-maker who can unlock teams set up to frustrate.
