Trailing 2-1 on aggregate after a first-leg defeat in Munich, Bayern arrived at San Siro for the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final knowing that only a win would keep their semi-final hopes alive.
However, Vincent Kompany’s side fell short of the result they needed, as a 2-2 draw sealed their exit from the competition, with Inter advancing 4-3 on aggregate.
The pattern of play mirrored the first encounter from the start: Bayern controlled possession, while Inter posed a constant threat on the counter.
Bayern carved out several promising opportunities in the first half, but time and again, Inter’s defense intervened at the crucial moment.
At the other end, Francesco Acerbi squandered what was arguably the best chance of the first half, steering his effort wide after meeting Federico Dimarco’s inviting free-kick.
Bayern finally found the breakthrough six minutes after the restart. Harry Kane picked up the ball on the edge of the box and curled a low shot through Dimarco’s legs and into the bottom corner.
However, Inter responded swiftly, with Lautaro Martínez equalising just seven minutes later, prodding the ball home from close range after a scramble in the box following a corner.
Things worsened for Bayern shortly after the hour mark when Benjamin Pavard rose highest to head home from a corner to give the Italians the lead against his former club.
Still, Bayern refused to fold. In the 76th minute, Eric Dier rose at the back post to meet Serge Gnabry’s pinpoint cross, sending a powerful header home to reignite their hopes.
Thomas Müller came agonizingly close to sending the game into extra time in the dying moments, but his header was kept out by Yann Sommer.
Despite their late push, Kompany’s men couldn’t find another goal, and with the game ending 2-2, Bayern were eliminated 4-3 on aggregate.
