Scottish Premiership side Dundee United are interested in a move for Reading outcast Marc McNulty this summer, according to The Courier.

The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with Tam Courts’ side, scoring five goals and picking up two assists in 30 competitive appearances as he now enters the final year of his contract at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

However, with McNulty being left out in the cold at Reading since the start of 2019, the forward has been shipped out on loan multiple times to the likes of Sunderland and Hibernian and is unlikely to stay in Berkshire beyond the end of the month.

Whether he goes out on another temporary deal or secures a permanent move away from Berkshire remains to be seen, but his next move looks set to cap off what has been a disastrous few years at the Championship side since he arrived back in the summer of 2018.

He made the move from Coventry City for an undisclosed fee after scoring 25 goals in 45 appearances for the Sky Blues during the 2017/18 season, with the Scotsman playing a huge part in leading them to League Two promotion.

This is a far cry from his record with the Royals, scoring just once in 13 displays during his three seasons at the Select Car Leasing Stadium and failing to replicate his previous form.

However, an escape route may come McNulty’s way shortly, with the 28-year-old said to be on a ‘longlist of targets’ for Tam Courts’ men. It remains to be seen whether they’re seeking a permanent deal or another loan move.

The Verdict:

Although Reading have very little depth in attack with Lucas Joao and George Puscas as their only senior options as things stand, McNulty’s career at the club is over without a doubt.

It just shows you how disastrous his time has been in Berkshire when the club is willing to offload him even with Sam Baldock leaving this summer and Nahum Melvin-Lambert going out on loan to St Patrick’s Athletic until November.

The Royals are also operating under a transfer embargo as things stand, one of the reasons why they have failed to make a single signing this summer.

But if they can get clearance from the EFL to recruit a few additions, with the forward department being one area they will probably need to address, this could signal the end of the Scottish forward’s time with the Royals.

You have to feel sorry for him because he was in scintillating form as previous club Coventry City, but this move just hasn’t worked out.
