Eintracht Frankfurt’s narrow 1-0 Bundesliga win over VfB Stuttgart last Saturday night provided some “food for thought” for SGE head coach Dino Toppmöller and young German footballer Nnamdi Collins. When Eintracht attacker Ansgar Knauff succumbed to injury in the 24th minute, Knauff’s regular Germany U21 teammate Collins came onto the pitch for a novel attacking midfield deployment. Collins proved an unexpected offensive force.
Collins – a rising German talent in his own right – missed out on several chances to record his second career Bundesliga goal. Toppmöller remarked afterwards that the 21-year-old might have scored a hat-trick. In an article published on Monday by Kicker. Collins discussed his first foray onto the attacking axes and expressed enthusiasm to work there in the future.
“I’ve never played right midfielder in my life,” Collins is quoted as saying. “It was the first time. At the beginning it was a bit unusual, also in terms of positioning, but it was definitely fun. In the end, I got into it better and was able to help the team a little.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s nerves,” Collins noted when speaking on the topic of his profligacy in front of goal. “I need to work on my shooting a bit. Fortunately, the team did well to compensate. I honestly could have scored four goals, but one [Mario Götze’s 70th-minute winner] was enough.“
