Juventus patron John Elkann said their objective this season is to ‘be competitive’ and begin ‘a new era’ under coach Thiago Motta.

The Bianconeri ended the second spell for Max Allegri with a sudden dismissal just hours after he won the Coppa Italia in May, then poached Thiago Motta from Bologna.

This evening, the senior team plays a friendly match against the Next Gen side at the Allianz Juventus Stadium, with 40,000 spectators in the stands.

Elkann, the heir to the Agnelli family fortune and President of their holding company Exor, spoke to Sky Sport Italia at the event.

“What Juventus have today is a coach with great potential. We are opening up a new era and it is wonderful to do that with a young coach and a young squad.”

Juventus revamped under Elkann

Elkann has been reshaping the entire club since effectively taking over from his cousin, Andrea Agnelli, who was forced to resign in the wake of the plusvalenze scandal over artificially inflated transfer fees.

He was asked what the objective was for Juventus this season.

“To be competitive. This is clear to both Thiago Motta and the team. Our ideas are also shared by the new coach. We have Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League, so there is a lot of work to be done.

“It is great to be here with a full stadium. The bond between my family and Juventus is strong, we are at home today, in our stadium, and it’s wonderful to see Juventus playing against our future.”

The Next Gen team is largely a youth squad who play in the Serie C tournament.

The only other Serie A clubs with this arrangement are Atalanta and as of this season also Milan.
