Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski tied Gerd Müller’s 49-year-old record for most goals in a single Bundesliga season on Saturday and the feat left him in awe.
After scoring the opener against SC Freiburg on Saturday, Lewandowski brought his league tally to 40 goals for the 2020-21 season.
“It’s a great honour,” reflected Lewandowski to club media on the achievement. “For me, but also for the modern history of the Bundesliga in Germany.”
“I’m very pleased about that. It was a legendary record that’s stood for a long time.”
“What Gerd Müller achieved was incredible. I never thought I could manage to share the record with him.”
“I’m very proud and I can’t quite believe it yet. I still need some time to process it.”
Despite being an individual achievement, the 32-year-old made sure to pay his respects to his teammates.
“The record belongs to the whole team. It’s not just my name on that list, it’s the whole team.”
With one match left to play, Lewandowski has 90 minutes to become the outright record holder.
Yet whether he does it or not, it’s still been an incredible season for the striker.
