Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has acknowledged wrongdoing on his part after he was handed a two-year suspended jail sentence for dangerous driving last week.
Williams received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. It’s understood he was driving erratically in his Audi A3 when he collided with a Ford Fiesta and crashed into the central reservation of the A34 in Cheshire on 20 August 2023.
Chester Crown Court heard that Williams had been attempting to show off to a female passenger seated beside him, and a witness reportedly filmed him with a balloon held to his mouth.
The Carrington academy graduate admitted to dangerous driving and driving without insurance.
The judge, Recorder Eric Lamb, also banned Williams from driving for three years and ordered him to complete 180 hours of unpaid work as part of a community order.
Now, Williams has broken his silence on the situation, also noting that he intends to restart his football career at a new club next season.
The 24-year-old said [via The Mirror], “I would like to thank my legal team headed by Richard Littler KC and Philip Williams of Blackfords LLP for establishing that I was not under the influence of any substance at the time of the accident.”
“I have always accepted that my driving that day fell below the standard that is expected of me. It was never my intention to cause injury to anyone but I am responsible for the standard of my driving.”
“I make no excuses. I have learnt from this experience and will ensure there is no repetition.”
“I wish to apologise again to those who were involved in the accident. Now that the case has concluded I look forward to resuming my career with a new team later this year.”
Williams made 51 appearances for United and earned one cap for England’s under-21s.
He has not featured since a loan spell at Ipswich Town, with his last appearance coming against QPR in December 2023. He remained a free agent throughout the recently concluded season, having departed United following the expiration of his contract last summer.
