Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Matt Butcher is close to joining Bristol Rovers on loan, Football League World has learned
Bristol Rovers are in advanced talks to land a loan agreement for Matt Butcher from League One rivals Wycombe Wanderers, Football League World understands.
Inigo Calderon has been able to complete just one signing to date after joining the club last month in ex-Brentford and Cardiff City midfielder Romaine Sawyers, who joined as a free agent following the expiration of his short-term contract with League Two side AFC Wimbledon.
The lack of activity at the Memorial Stadium has compounded frustrations for supporters, with Rovers lingering just above the relegation zone ahead of Monday's deadline.
However, Rovers are now edging closer to the loan acquisition of Butcher, and further arrivals will be hoped for in the coming days.
Sources close to FLW have revealed the Gas are in advanced talks to sign Butcher on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
The 27-year-old only signed for the Chairboys twelve months ago from Plymouth Argyle but is seemingly surplus to requirements, which has opened the door for Rovers to pursue a loan agreement as he bids to gain regular minutes elsewhere.
Butcher has made 13 appearances for the automatic promotion hopefuls, but just three of those have been league starts.
Rovers are rather well-stocked in midfield when it comes to personnel, though the ex-Bournemouth man will be hoping to complete a move and force his way into Calderon's starting side.
An agreement for Butcher is nearing, but Rovers are poised to welcome further fresh faces to the club before the deadline passes.
As reported on Thursday morning by BristolLive reporter Dan Hargraves, one signing is already close - likely to be Butcher, all things considered - while another two arrivals have also been mooted.
The impending signing, be it Butcher or someone else, would have to be registered today in order to feature in Sunday's crunch showdown against fellow strugglers Peterborough United.
Rovers, who are 19th in League One, are just one point and one place behind Sunday's opponents and will be targeting all three points to extend their four-point gap over 22nd-placed Burton Albion.
Having at least one new signing in through the door by then will hand a timely boost ahead of Posh's visit, but supporters will hope for another acquisition or two in order to alleviate growing fears surrounding relegation back down to League Two.
