Sky Sports pundit David Prutton shares his thoughts on Josh Koroma's shock exit as Huddersfield Town release 18 players in major summer overhaul.
Huddersfield Town confirmed a significant overhaul in their recent retained list, with 18 players released from the first-team and academy setups, including several long-serving names, such as club captain Jonathan Hogg, Danny Ward, Tom Lees and Matty Pearson.
However, a surprising name on the list was Josh Koroma.
At 26 years old, the decision to let the winger leave at the end of his contract has raised eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit David Prutton was asked whether he was surprised by the Terriers' decision to part ways with Koroma.
“I think it ended disappointingly,” Prutton said. “They had a chunk of the season under Michael Duff where they looked solid, but that came to a halt, 11 games without a win, if I recall. Injuries played a part, and they lost ground on the promotion places.”
Following Duff's departure in March, interim boss John Worthington took over, leading the Terriers to 10th in the standings. As mentioned by Prutton, the shift in direction could signal a change in philosophy ahead of next season, as the Terriers continue on with their search for a head coach.
"John Worthington, such an able pair of hands in an intervening period," said Prutton. "But from a playing staff point of view, possibly different players are needed for the task of getting out of League One. It is a different beast compared to the Championship."
"But maybe this is a sign of a horses-for-courses approach, even if we're talking about players who scored regularly last season. Perhaps it's just a change in strategy. We'll have to wait and see what comes of it."
Koroma's statistics make for compelling reading. He ended the 2024/25 League One campaign with 11 league goals, four of which came in his final four games as he went on to top Huddersfield's scoring charts.
Koroma made 169 appearances for the Terriers, scoring 35 goals and registering 10 assists. His return of 11 this term was his most prolific since the 2018/19 campaign, in which he also scored 11 times for Leyton Orient, earning him a move to Huddersfield.
Huddersfield's summer strategy now looks focused on rejuvenating the squad to better suit the rigours of League One.
But with so many experienced figures heading for the exit, and a recent proven goalscorer in Koroma also shown the door, it is a high-risk, high-reward approach.
Explaining their decisions in a club statement, Huddersfield said: “Conducting a full review of our footballing operations following the 2024/25 campaign, the club retains a desire to refresh the complexion of our first-team squad, having fallen short of our targets this season. Looking to head into the 2025/26 season reinvigorated, decisions have been made to allow full flexibility and freedom to any incoming head coach.”
