Don Goodman has given his verdict on the potential appointment of Johannes Hoff Thorup at QPR.

Pundit Don Goodman has questioned whether former Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup would be a good fit for Queens Park Rangers.

QPR do officially still have a manager, but Marti Cifuentes was placed on gardening leave at the end of April after his representatives reportedly held talks with West Bromwich Albion.

Despite a move to Albion being off the cards for Cifuentes, the 42-year-old's position at Loftus Road looks untenable, and as the R's begin their search for his replacement, Thorup and ex-Lyon manager Pierre Sage have both been linked with the role.

However, the Hoops are thought to be closing in on the appointment of Thorup, and should he take over in West London, it would mark a swift return to management for the Dane, who was only sacked by Norwich in April after his side missed out on the Championship play-off places.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman admitted that he is unsure if Thorup would be a good appointment for QPR after his underwhelming spell at Norwich, while he also expressed doubts about whether QPR would be the right move for the 36-year-old given the lack of ambition they have shown in recent years.

"It's an interesting appointment if it happens," Goodman said.

"It didn't go as planned for Johannes Hoff Thorup at Norwich.

"He is publicly saying that the remit wasn't made clear to him with regards to the fact that it had to be play-offs or bust for him.

"He felt he was there to build and develop the team over a period of time, but clearly, that wasn't good enough for Norwich.

"1.2 points per game isn't good enough for Norwich in the Championship as a club that is used to being at the top of the division whenever it finds itself in there.

"Is he the right man for QPR? It remains to be seen.

"It's another strange football club, I'm not really sure what the ambition is there.

"They may possibly lose players, it's all a bit up in the air, so I'm not really sure, from either perspective, whether it's the right fit, but if it happens, we'll soon find out."

Johannes Hoff Thorup could be a gamble worth taking for QPR

While it appears Thorup was not totally aligned with the Norwich board, it did seem as though he had been brought in to oversee a long-term project at Carrow Road, with many assuming that his first year at the club was a transition season.

The Canaries did not spend a single day in the play-offs during Thorup's tenure, which was undoubtedly an underachievement given the quality of the squad at his disposal, but he did deliver some encouraging performances and positive results over the course of the season, and he can count himself a little unlucky to have lost his job.

With a clear focus on developing young players, Thorup is the definition of a project manager, and that could make him the perfect choice for a club like QPR who, as Goodman says, have lacked a clear strategy and direction of late, but it is fair to say that his appointment would not come without risks.
