FLW can exclusively reveal that Luton Town are closing in on a move for Wigan Athletic's Thelo Aasgaard
Luton Town are in advanced talks with Wigan Athletic for Latics top scorer Thelo Aasgaard, Football League World can exclusively reveal.
The Norway under-21 international has scored 12 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions for the League One club this season, and has already attracted interest from Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest, according to Alan Nixon, while The Sun have previously reported that Championship side Stoke City have also eyed his services.
However, FLW can now report that the Hatters have seemingly won the race for Aasgaard's services, as they look to bolster their chances of achieving Championship survival under new boss Matt Bloomfield.
The fee is thought to be in excess of £3 million while Wigan boss Maloney recently hinted there is a release clause in the 22-year-old's contract.
The Hatters currently sit in the second-tier drop zone following Saturday afternoon's 1-0 home defeat to Millwall, but the seemingly imminent arrival of Aasgaard could come as a major boost to their chances of avoiding consecutive relegations, after they finished 18th in the Premier League last season.
The Latics are not enjoying a great season themselves, and are just 16th in the League One table ahead of Tuesday night's trip to Peterborough United, having scored just 26 goals in as many third-tier fixtures.
However, Aasgaard has been a shining light for Maloney's men so far this term and is directly responsible for 10 of their league goals, having scored eight and assisted a further two.
The Norway youth international is also improving all the time, and has already bettered last season's career-best tally of nine goals across all competitions, which suggests he is ready to make his return to the Championship, after suffering relegation from the second tier with the Latics following a tricky 2022/23 campaign.
In recent weeks, the 22-year-old has been in a particularly strong vein of form, as demonstrated by the 95th-minute winner he bagged for the Latics via a free kick against Stevenage on 18th January.
He then went on to score an impressive brace in an FA Cup third round tie with Mansfield Town, which handed his side a 2-0 win, and a fourth-round meeting with Premier League Fulham.
But Aasgaard has long since produced moments of real quality and has previously performed well against the Hatters, whose supporters may remember the stunning volley he scored against them in an FA Cup replay in January 2023, while back in September 2022 he scored a late winner for the Latics in the Championship at Kenilworth Road.
