Don Goodman has admitted that it is "hard to imagine" Plymouth Argyle beating the drop despite recent home victories over Norwich City and Sheffield United.

Miron Muslic has certainly improved his Pilgrims side since arriving in January, yet they still firmly face the threat of relegation with Argyle pinned to the bottom of the table on 40 points.

A 2-1 victory against the Canaries gave them hope of survival and their comeback victory over promotion-chasing Blades will have only furthered those credentials.

In a closely fought contest on Saturday lunchtime, Muslic's side defended resolutely to keep the score at 1-0, before landing two late sucker punches on United. The first came from the ever-reliable Ryan Hardie, while the winner was netted by Muhamed Tijani, who scored just his second goal in green and white with a delightful volley into the bottom corner following Jack Robinson’s hooked clearance.

This result keeps Argyle in the fight, and despite many pundits and fans having written off their survival hopes earlier in the season, with four games remaining, they still have a genuine chance of pulling off a great escape.

Don Goodman still unsure of Plymouth's survival credentials

Don Goodman spoke exclusively to Football League World about whether he believes Plymouth still have a genuine chance of survival following their weekend victory over Sheffield United.

For him, the answer was clear. Despite their recent resurgence, he feels the remaining fixtures will simply prove too challenging for Argyle to pick up the points needed to escape the drop.

"It was an incredible win against Sheffield United," Goodman told FLW. "Having conceded first, the character and resilience they have had to show to come back and win that. Obviously, they beat Norwich in the previous home game.

"The problem for them is the two home games left are against Leeds United and Coventry City, who are both very much fighting for something.

"The other problem is their away form is absolutely horrific. I think they have won one game all season at Portsmouth, and they have away games at Preston, who are difficult to play against at Deepdale, and Middlesbrough, who are chasing the play-off places.

"As plucky as they've been, and as well as they have done to get themselves within three points of safety, it is still hard to imagine them pulling it off. If they do, it will be one of the greatest of great escapes."

Plymouth Argyle's remaining fixtures pose a threat

Home Park was always destined to play a pivotal role in Plymouth’s survival hopes, and it has indeed been central to them picking up any points at all. Of the 40 points they’ve accumulated, 31 have come on home soil, with Argyle boasting a positive record in Devon.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for their away form. Argyle have managed just one win on the road all season and have scored only eight goals in 21 away matches.

If they are to stay up, they’ll likely need at least seven more points - meaning one of their remaining away fixtures must yield more than just a defeat.

To make matters even more challenging, as Goodman pointed out, they are up against teams with everything still to play for. Leeds are pushing for automatic promotion, while Middlesbrough and Coventry are battling it out for a play-off place.

Should Argyle pull it off, it would be nothing short of miraculous - but at present, it’s difficult to see anything other than relegation on the horizon.
