Joe Jacobson doesn't believe Bristol City star Nahki Wells can make the step up to the Premier League.
Sky Sports pundit and Wycombe Wanderers legend Joe Jacobson doesn't believe Bristol City's Nahki Wells can make the step-up to the Premier League.
The Bermuda international has enjoyed a great season with the Robins under Liam Manning, who has turned the team into a promotion contender this campaign.
Wells scored a crucial stoppage-time winner against play-off rivals West Brom, which was his tenth league goal of the season.
With Bristol City firmly in the hunt for promotion, questions are being raised about whether the 34-year-old could make the step-up to the Premier League at his age, or if it could be too late in his career to make the transition to the top flight.
Well has played just nine Premier League matches in his entire career, which came with Burnley almost eight years ago. The attacker has never scored in England's top flight, but there's debate about whether that could change if he returns to the Premier League.
Football League World exclusively spoke to Sky Sports pundit and Wycombe legend Jacobson, quizzing him on whether he believes that the Bermuda international forward could make the step-up to the Premier League.
The Welshman responded: "I'm not sure about Nahki Wells - I think that he's a very good player, and he's done very well in the EFL over a number of years, but at his age now, he's probably playing at the level that he's at.
"[In] the Premier League, I don't think anyone is going to take a punt on his at his age. If he was ten years younger, then maybe, but at his age there's not many Premier League teams that go and sign free agents at that age - especially ones that've never quite done it in the Premier League.
"He's had a fantastic season, but I think it's just going to be a contract extension and him to stay there [Bristol City]."
Whilst it's hard to look past Wells' age, and how difficult it would be to transition into the top flight in the twilight of his career, it certainly can't be ruled out as a possibility.
Jacobson is most likely correct when he mentions that no Premier League team would likely opt to sign the attacker in the summer if he becomes a free agent, based off his age and record in the top flight. However, that doesn't mean he won't be there with the Robins should they gain promotion.
Wells is clearly thriving in Manning's system, rolling back the years and coming up with some vintage performances to help his side edge closer to securing their spot in the top six. As we've seen so many times before, the correct system can bring the very best out of any player at any level.
Clearly very comfortable and confident at Ashton Gate, Wells could easily prove Jacobson wrong if he remains with the club past the end of the season, and they secure promotion to the Premier League. The 34-year-old has proved to be a key component towards the top of the Championship, so he could also be just as effective in the top flight.
