The Saints have had a truly traumatic time back in England's top tier, with Russell Martin's style and philosophy not bringing results leading to his exit earlier this season, and the more experienced figurehead of Ivan Juric was unable to arrest the slide.

With the Croat expected to depart St Mary's Stadium this summer due to a break clause being in his contract, there has been a prevalent name in the rumour mill to replace him in the dugout, and that is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

The 35-year-old, who was previously an assistant manager with the Saints under Ralph Hasenhuttl, with The Sun reporting in early March that he is the club's top target ahead of the summer to be the fourth manager to take the role since Hasenhuttl's exit in 2022.

Given how they dispatched of Leeds in last year's play-off final, many would expect Southampton to be in the mix for automatic promotion next season when they arrive back in the Championship.

However, Sky Sports pundit and former EFL striker Don Goodman thinks that Rohl, or an alternative choice for the Saints if they go down another route, may have a real hard time of things, whilst speaking exclusively to Football League World.

"I'm not sure I'd be backing anybody to make a success of Southampton next season in terms of their quest to get back to the Premier League," Goodman told FLW.

"It's a club that's a mess. They've won two Premier League games all season, struggling at both ends of the pitch, still only on nine points so they haven't managed to surpass the Premier League all-time low which is 11 points, and that will be something that I'm sure everybody connected with Southampton would be absolutely desperate to fulfill.

"So, whoever goes in there, whether it's Danny Rohl or someone else, is going to have a massive, massive job on their hands, an overhaul, playing squad, they've lost 11 of their last 12 games, and with that comes a total confidence-shattering feeling really.

"It's not like they're going down with a massive fight, so whoever gets that job, whether it's Danny Rohl or not, has got an enormous task on their hands."

There may be problems at Southampton right now, and who knows what will happen in the summer in terms of player turnover, but Danny Rohl would have more resource and ambition at the south coast outfit than in his current job.

The German coach has had multiple public wrangles with Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri, and the latest escapade of the Thai businessman failing to pay players on time for March will be another reason for Rohl to walk out of the door come the summer.

Rohl will already know he's not going to get a big budget to make changes at Hillsborough next season, such is the way the club is run, but he would likely be afforded that luxury at Southampton, should he get the job.
