Cesc Fabregas decided he is staying at Como for at least another season and compares the atmosphere to his early days at Arsenal, but confirms he ‘spoke to other clubs’ too.

The coach has made a huge impression in his first top flight campaign of management, steering Como to mid-table comfort and launching some sharp talents onto the scene like Nico Paz.

He had been linked with numerous other teams, including Juventus, Milan, Roma, and above all Bayer Leverkusen, but has opted to remain at the Stadio Sinigaglia.

“I am a fan of energy, that is why I am positive,” said Fabregas in his press conference ahead of the game with Hellas Verona.

“When I talk about family, that means everything, as family gives me the strength to keep improving every time. I saw this potential when I arrived, now we have a positive energy, everyone feels it and is united. The fans believe more than two years ago, we all move in the same direction, even when there are difficult moments.”

Although Fabregas has committed his future to Como, there are still some details that need to be worked out with the owners.

“I talked to the club, we made progress, I am happy here. I want to understand if everyone wants to continue like this and they are all aligned with my ideas. I also spoke to other clubs, I am respectful and speak to everyone.

“There is to be an official announcement, I am happy, we all need to be on the same page to continue together.”

After promotion from Serie B and the mid-table finish, Fabregas and Como are now aiming higher.

“I want more for Como, not for me. I must feel able to carry on the project we have here. Next year must be one of consecration, of consolidation for the club and the team. Year by year, keep taking steps forward.”

Arsenal atmosphere recreated for Fabregas

The former player compares the atmosphere he has found in Lombardy to the one he experienced in London.

“I was alone at Arsenal at the age of 16, so I know how you create a family. We will have a training centre here of a high level. I want to put my lads in the best possible context to create a human bond. I want a good person first and foremost, more than a good player, so I look them in the eye and want to evaluate everything,” noted Fabregas.

“In the future, I want a smaller squad, just 20 players. It is easy for us to win now, because we have no pressure on us. I don’t like lying to people. Talking about Europe next season, that is what the fans ask, but I want it to be about consolidation.”

Real Madrid retain a buy-back clause on Nico Paz, but Como are adamant he will remain with them for next season.

“Nico Paz is fundamental for us. Everyone needs to be calm and not over-reach. I’d say next year is about stability, then we can try to make a leap forward. We are ambitious, the President first and foremost,” concluded Fabregas.
